Carl Gottlieb Steffens
1750-1825 Danzig

Carolina Dorothea Weichbrodt
1768-1829, Muggen

According to Aflhard Kowallek (deceased), Emilie Henriette Wilhelmine Steffens [1794-1877], daughter of Carl and Carolina Weichbrodt, was an accomplished artist and is very likely the artist who painted these portraits of her parents.

William Pickering, Esq, Counsil to Mecklenburg [my 4x Great Grandfather] married Caroline Amalie Friedrieke Steffens, and his brother, Peter Pickering, married her sister, Emilie Henriette Wilhelmine Steffens. Thus, two important and wealthy families united in marriage and for business.

Colonel Von KamekeExcerpt from Peter Pickering’s journal: “… A few weeks after this had taken place, my Brother [William] returned from Danzig to Liverpool; and after having asked me, how I stood with Miss Hulley and I have explained the same to him; he said its well, and he rejoced it had been so; as he was authorized by Miss Emilie Steffens and her Parents to inform me if my wishes remained as the formerly were; there would now be no longer any difficulty made to our Union on my arrival in Danzig; as then our Nuptuals mine and Miss Emilie Steffens could take place, on the same Day as the Nuptuals, of the younger Daughter of Mr. Steffens with F… Colonell von Kamecke the Commandant of Danzig which was the wish of the Bride of Collonel von Kamecke Commandant of Danzig [photo].

“In consiquence of this communication from Miss Steffens and her Parents, I immediately, departed from Liverpool and arrived in Danzig about the 1st March 1818 and was married to Miss Emilie Steffens on the 18th of April 1818.

… “I soon saw the drift of all the Collonels enquiries, and as soon as I had informed him; which I pointedly did, what had brought me to the Cambleton [Campbeltown, England] and that my Brother [William] had married Miss Steffens oldest Daughter of one of the richest Merchants of Danzig; and that the youngest Daughter of Mr. Steffens, was betrothed to Collonel von Kamecke, the Commandant of Danzig; he, Collonel McFallester became more friendly towards me.”

Danzig / Gdansk, Prussia – The Steffens House, called the “Golden House”, is considered one of the most beautiful patrician houses on Long Market as the front elevation of the 400 year old house was adorned with gold. The Renaissance building commissioned by the rich corn merchant Hans Speymann acquired its nickname due to the rich gold decoration applied by the Rostock artist Hans Voigt. The house was later occupied by the wealthy merchant Steffens family. Read more in an article in this 1939 National Geographic Magazine.

Letter from Steffens cousin?

From: Michael Steffens
by accident I found your Pickering/Steffens website. With great interest I learn that your chronology of this family stopped at the end of the 18th century. You mentioned the “Steffens-House” in Danzig. My father and my grandpa, Walter Steffens sen., his first son Walter Steffens jun. and my father Karl-Heinz Steffens, were residents of Danzig until the end of second world war. They escaped to West Germany. There are any further connections of the Pickering/Steffens family perhaps leading to my grandpa Walter Steffens? My father told me, that the Steffens family were in former times succesful merchants.
