HARRISON & PICKERING
The surname, Harrison, is an ancient Cheshire name, as old as the Pickering names going back as far as the mid 1300’s in Daresbury. The Harrison name has been carried down through the generations of my family for 400 years – from the 16th to the 20th century!
“In 1652 Gilbert Gerard, JP, was the only one who voted against imprisonment of a Mr Harrison arraigned for blasphemy. Harrison had said, ‘the soul within man was God, and there was neither heaven nor hell but in a man’s own self’. My Cheshire Ancestors
The pedigree at the Herald’s College lists “Pickering de Walford” which was the name of the estate within the chapelry of Daresbury.
My ancient Pickering ancestors were predominately christened at Daresbury, a 12th century chapelry within the parish of Runcorn, Cheshire. Pickerings are recorded to have lived in Daresbury from at least 1357. It is recorded that Gilbert Gerard, a minor cog in the Commonwealth administration of Cheshire, made important improvements to the manor of Crewood, near Crowton. The name “‘Crewood’ was derived from the Celtic word ‘cryw’, a ford or fish weir … surely named after the weir on the river Weaver at Pickerings (o’ the Boat) … which means the name of Pickering may be found in Crowton since the early 1200’s!
This 1652 hand drawn map includes Crowton, Norley and Pickerings ‘o the Boat, clearly shows that Pickering lands were located, all within just 3-4 miles of each other, for centuries.
Baptized in Daresbury, John (Johanis) Pickering, Esq. [1595-1661] succeeded his father at Warford [Walford], Mobberley (17 miles NE of Crowton), in the time of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603). John’s son, Robert Pickering of Thelwall, born 1619, was the purchaser of lands, fisheries, farms and manors at Hatton, Thelwall, Crowley Grange at Arley, and farms at Moore and Marston. So, this might explain how my ancestors found themselves predominately located in Crowton as well as nearby Norley, Bradley, Kingsly, Frodsham and Sutton.
For the most part, this was a very successful family that gained financial successes from the early 17th century, through the industrial age in England and America, and into the 21st century around the globe, The families who settled in this corner of Cheshire raised many generations of very successful farmers, millers, merchants and lawyers. From here they took their trade and talents to America, Australia, New Zealand, Prussia, Germany, and Russia.
I am searching for the parents of John Pickering [1693-1749]. There were two Jonathans born in 1693 in Weaverham:

Our family tree begins with the speculation that Peter Pickering, born about 1556 of Whitley, Great Budworth [LDS] is our first recorded ancestor. This Peter needs further investigation, but he was born in the right geographical area at about the right year to be the father of the next generation.
