Killington Manor was continuously held in the Pickering family for over 300 years.

Francis Vaughan sold Killington Hall and Firbank to the tenants and was in all likelihood the son of Anne and John Vaughan.

“Francis Vaughan of Sutton upon Derwen in the county of York esquire, in the 27 Eliz. conveyed the said manors to trustees for the use of the tenants; which trustees conveyed to every of the tenants their own tenements, with a proportionable part or portion of the moors, wastes, common of pasture, perquisites, and profits of courts, and of all other privileges, liberties, and franchises, parcel of or belonging to the said manors, according to their then annual rent; and to every individual, the wood growing upon his own tenement. — The king, as paramount, claims sais and stray within the respective liberties; and they pay to the lessee of the crown the ancient quit rent of 6’s 8d, which comes nearly to the sum of one penny for each house.”

“There is a park belonging to the hall, which anciently had deer in it; but none, probably, after the death of Sir Christopher Pickering [grandfather of Francis Vaughan] who was the last resident of the family there.”

Today Killington Hall includes the ruins of a moated 15th century tower and the shell of walls with windows that have survived intact. There are no floors in the tower now, and there is an outhouse buit within the remaind.

“She was the “mother to the famous Major Richard Creed, who attended King William in all his wars, and never more himself than when he look’d an enemy in the face, and at the glorious battle of Blenheim, 1704, he commanded one of those squadrons that began the attack; in two sever charges he received no hurt, but in the third, many wounds, still valiantly fighting, he was shot through the head, and his dead body brought off by his brother, at the hazard of his own life.”Upon her husband’s death she occupied herself as an amateur painter and instructed young girls in fine needlework and “other feminine arts.” She was described by Samuel Pepys as “very well-bred and comely”, though inclined to be stout.

Built in 1756, the Pickering almshouses are to the south-west of the church on the Denford road (Titchmarsh), and form a long one-story stone building with dormer windows, a tablet records that “This Hospital was erected and endowed for the support of eight Poor Persons by Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Pickering, eldest daughter of the late Sir Gilbert Pickering, Bart.”

According to Ancestry.com, our John Pickering (1666) was half brother to Sir Gilbert Pickering, Esq. The genealogy information below has been identified as our [likely] direct ancestors and what follows here can be considered as accurate as one can be using ancient records. He was born before Sir Gilbert so there is a mystery as to why John was not heir to Sir John. I hope to unravel that mystery some day.

Killington — The first of the name of Pickering that came to Killington, was William de Pykeringe, son of Thomas de Pykeringe, in the reign of king Henry the third. In the 44th year of that king, Peter de Brus the third granted to William de Pykeringe the manor of Killington in 1259-60.

The stipulation was that Peter de Brus would have the rights to hunt the land at to cost to him or his men. He was to hunt the lands of Killington as far as the limits of that part of the forest of the Hay, which belonged to Walter de Lindesay.
